What's New

Goodbye GroupWise, Hello Outlook and Other Improvements/Upgrades

Schedule a session to activate your new Outlook Account today. Visit www.hofstra.edu/training to register for one of the many OUTLOOK SETUP sessions designed for both MAC and PC users. How do these changes affect faculty, administrators, and staff personally?

1) Updates will require an understanding of specifically when in the academic year these changes occur as these changes necessitate some 'down time.'

2) Additionally, faculty and staff with a MAC or a PC will be asked to bring over into Outlook their calendar, personal archive and contacts into the new email system. MAC users must attend a SETUP session.

3) Password reset time intervals will be different with Outlook and GW.

4) Mac users will finally have a web-based client to email that functions the same as a PC web client. For all users, the email interface is different and provides many features that faculty will find useful in managing their mail with their students and colleagues.

5) Faculty members who have hand-held devices to read email (e.g., BlackBerry) need to understand how these changes will affect their device set up.

6) There are changes to the archiving systems that everyone needs to be aware of. ALL mail coming into the University and internal email will be archived for 1 year. Personalized archiving beyond 1 year can be easily set up.

7) In the spring, PC users and MAC users will be upgraded to the new desktop operating system. PC Users will move to Windows 7 and Mac users will be upgraded to Snow Leopard. In some cases these changes may require more memory or a hardware upgrade.

IMPORTANT: Are you using GroupWise in a special way? Do you use distribution lists, resources or a hand held device? Send an email to Laurie.A.Harvey@hofstra.edu

Buzz Words

What is cloud computing? Cloud computing is a style of computing in which services and resources are delivered over the internet - virtually in the cloud. Hosted Outlook is an example of "cloud computing" as your emails will be in a secured environment and will be available anywhere you can obtain internet access. .
