Gregory Maney

Gregory Maney

Gregory Maney earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001. Professor Maney’s research draws upon a range of methodologies to examine social movements and ethnic group relations. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles, which have appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, International Journal of Conflict Management, Journal of Peace Research, Mobilization, Peace Review, Research in Social Movements, Conflict and Change, Social Problems, Sociological Perspectives, and Sociological Methods and Research.

Additionally, Professor Maney and two colleagues recently received grants from the National Science Foundation and the American Sociological Association’s Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline to conduct a comparative, longitudinal study of discourses by U.S. peace movement organizations. Their findings will appear in a book titled Contesting Patriotism: U.S. Peace Movement Discourses, 1990-2004, to be published by Rowman & Littlefield in fall 2007.

Professor Maney’s teaching complements his research interests. In a course titled “Ethnicity and Minority Group Relations,” he uses a comparative historical approach to encourage students to empathize with (other) minority groups, to recognize common sources of conflict and to identify promising conflict transformation strategies. He also frequently teaches a course titled “Building Strong Communities: Organizing in Diverse Settings.” Through role-plays, small group projects and observing interpersonal dynamics in local organizations, the course develops cross-cultural awareness, facilitation, conflict transformation and organizing skills. In addition, he has conducted numerous workshops on topics ranging from coalition formation to peace building.
