SPIN Plus/COS

The Office for Research and Sponsored Programs subscribes to a selection of online services provided by InfoEd. Inc ., a world leader in providing research administrative and promotion support to colleges and universities.

COS - Community of Science
COS Funding Opportunities is the largest, most comprehensive database of available funding. More than 24,000 records representing over $33 billion in funding. Opportunities by sponsors throughout the world for recipients throughout the world. Sponsors include private foundations, public agencies, national and local governments, corporations and more. Monies available for work in all disciplines physical sciences, social sciences, life sciences, health & medicine, arts & humanities. Funding for many purposes, such as research, collaborations, travel, curriculum development, conferences, fellowships, postdoctoral positions, equipment acquisitions, capital or operating expenses. Updated daily, all information verified with sponsor, edited for consistency and optimized for accurate searching.

The ORSP subscription to SPIN will expire on April 30, 2008.

SPIN, or the Sponsored Programs Information Network database, is an up-to-date listing of national and international government and private funding sources currently in use by more than 700 institutions worldwide. The SPIN database contains funding information related to research, curriculum development, training, equipment acquisition, workshops/conferences, travel in support of collaborations, and many other forms of professional activity. Included among the disciplinary topics in the SPIN database are: Arts/Humanities; Behavioral/Social Sciences; Education; Science & Technology; Mathematics; Computer Science; Management/Commerce; and Law. After clicking on a broad topic, the SPIN user can narrowing his/her search by selecting one or more descriptive keywords.

GENIUS is a searchable expertise profile system that contains faculty CV's (and will be expanded in the near future to contain facilities and institutional profiles). In an effort to promote research collaborations, the GENIUS database is made available to all InfoEd clients and at no cost to sponsors and industry.

A third component of SPIN Plus/COS is called SMARTS. SMARTS matches GENIUS profiles with funding opportunities in the SPIN database and delivers automatic daily updates. This service ensures that investigators are kept current on new funding opportunities, new and approaching deadlines, and sponsor updates.

While SPIN Plus tools are considered user-friendly, the Office for Research and Sponsored Programs will periodically conduct workshops on the most effective uses of the Internet to identify and secure external grant support, including a demonstration of SPIN Plus/COS tools. Information about upcoming workshops will be announced at the start of the new academic year.
