This Advanced Russian course is an introduction to the system of the Russian functional styles. The aim of the course is to develop students' awareness of the stylistic variation of contemporary Russian language. It also provides an introduction to the subtleties of idiomatic Russian on the levels of morphology, syntax, vocabulary, and phraseology.

The course will assist the students in developing their reading, writing, and translation skills.

The course will begin with the discussion of the Russian literary style. This part will serve as an introduction to the basic notions of literary stylistics and their practical application. Later in the course we will analyze scientific and business texts. Rather than concentrate on the terminological systems of various academic disciplines, we will focus on the morphological and syntactic features of the Formal Russian style. Finally, we will turn to the language of contemporary media with particular focus on the jargon of the Internet.

The typical work pace includes reading an assigned text or series of sample texts and a subsequent written assignment. Written assignments normally consist of answering questions to the text, exercises on stylistics, or translation into English.

Each assignment is evaluated based on two criteria: grammar and content. After receiving the initial draft back, students must make corrections based on instructor's comments. Only after handing in corrected assignments will students receive full credit.

Students' performance (which includes handing in assignments on time, as well as regular attendance), and taking into consideration instructor's comments in final draft, will determine the final grade.

If you have any condition, such as a mental or physical disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, please notify me in the first week of the course so that we make appropriate arrangements.
