Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Religion at Hofstra University. I am pleased to invite you to join the great adventure that is the "academic study of religion." Given religion's complexity, its variety and the way it seems to permeate so many aspects of human society, religion is fascinating.

Here you will find faculty and student colleagues who know that a world like ours requires a high degree of religious literacy. Some students are here to gather information that will prepare them to be more attuned to the people they will meet in fields like business, diplomacy or law. Others pursue the study of religion as a way to think through their own religious commitments in a disciplined and impartial context.

Whatever your motivation for undertaking it, I can promise that the study of religion at Hofstra will be open, objective, and capable of revealing things that will challenge you and change the way you think.
