Hagedorn Garden Event

In April 2007 the Department of Curriculum and Teaching in the School of Education and Allied Human Services inaugurated a vegetable garden in the Science Room of Hagedorn Hall. This garden is part of an environmental education project aimed at providing future teachers with the experience and understanding of teaching methods that will both inform their students about the environment and inspire them to nurture and preserve it.

Since that first planting last spring, Professors Irene Plonczak and Jacqueline Grennon-Brooks, who teach a science methods class (ELED 129), have formed a partnership with the Walnut Street School from the nearby Uniondale School District.

On November 8 fifth graders from the Walnut Street School participated in a Harvest Festival with Hofstra faculty and students. The day featured a variety of workshops, such as “Vegetable Preservation: Canning and Pickling” and “Preparing Natural Dyes from Beets and Spinach,” as well as an exhibit of vegetables harvested from the Hagedorn Hall vegetable garden.
