Joan Bloomgarden, Ph.D., ATR-BC, CGP, LCAT, MHC
Joan is an Associate Professor and the Internship Coordinator for the Creative Arts Therapy Program at Hofstra University. She started her professional life as a licensed elementary school teacher as well as a licensed art teacher. While she started her career teaching children, she has changed her focus and directs her research and academic life toward the field of creativity and how it spans the lifetime. Joan has her Ph.D. in Professional Psychology, which forms the underpinnings of the special courses she teaches such as Creativity, Multicultural Art Therapy and Psychological & Psychiatric Aspects of Art Therapy. She has published and presented nationally and internationally. Dr. Bloomgarden has been a member of the Editorial Board of Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, and the Journal of Trauma and Loss in Children.


Deborah Elkis-Abuhoff, PhD., ATR-BC, LCAT
Deborah Elkis-Abuhoff is an assistant professor with research interests in bringing art therapy to the medical community. Her current research projects include the use of clay with people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and the creation of mandalas with breast cancer patients. Dr. Abuhoff brings aspects of clinical health/psychology to the art therapy classes she teaches. Dr. Abuhoff's Ph.D. is in Clinical/Health Psychology and she has diverse experiences with geriatric, psychiatric and medical populations. Dr. Abuhoff is currently active in the local hospital community and is presently a member of the Internal Review Board at South Oaks Hospital.

Adjunct Faculty

Viven Abrams, LCAT, ATR-BC (alumni) is an art therapist and Dual Diagnosis Program Coordinator at South Oaks Hospital, as well as a faculty member at Hofstra University. Ms. Abrams's areas of special interest include working with addicted mentally ill patients and with people who have experienced trauma, grief and loss. Ms. Abrams supervises interns, graduates and has a limited private practice.


Joan Alpers, MSP, LCAT, ATR-BC, CCLS is the Coordinator of the Child Life Program at Schneider Children's Hospital of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. With over 20 years of experience, Joan has given numerous presentations and in-services to the Child Life Community, the Art Therapy Community, and the Allied Health Community. In addition, she holds graduate faculty level appointments and maintains a private practice as an art therapist.


Lois Carey MSW, BCDSW, Mrs. Carey is a diplomate of the National Association of Social Workers, a Fellow in the New York Society of Clinical Social Work Psychotherapists, a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor for the International Association of Play Therapy, a Professor for the International Society for Child and Play Therapy, the President of the Association for Play Therapy and the Director of the Center for Sandplay Studies. She has lectured on Sandplay nationally and internationally and is co-editor, of Family Play Therapy,(Aronson, 1994); author of Sandplay Therapy with Families and Children,(Aronson, 1999); and co-editor School Based Play Therapy (2002).


Margaret Carlock, LCAT, ATR-BC (alumni) is an administrator and senior art therapist at The Children's Learning Center of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County (UCPN). She holds a graduate level faculty position at Hofstra University and has a private practice.


Joanna Cutolo, M.A., LCAT, ATR-BC, CTRS (alumni) has worked with geriatric populations for over 15 years. Johanna is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and has presented workshops about art therapy to the New York State and Long Island Therapeutic Recreation Associations. Johanna serves as an adjunct professor in art therapy at Hofstra University and as an art therapy consultant to the Gurwin Geriatric Center in Commack, New York.


Diane Duggan, Ph.D, ADTR has been Dance Therapist since 1973 as a clinician, supervisor, teacher and author. She works primarily with children and adolescents and is also a licensed Psychologist. She was an executive producer for the film Dance Therapy: The Power of Movement and a Program Chairperson for the 1985 joint Creative Arts Therapy Conference. Dr. Duggan holds a Ph.D. in School Psychology from New York University and an M.S. in Dance Therapy from Hunter College.


Dodie Gillett, MA, Ph.D., is a Creative Arts Therapist with a doctorate in Counseling Psychology. She has worked with a wide range of clients in a variety of different settings. Her focus is on children and adolescents with anxiety and depression, underprivileged and underrepresented groups, and loss and bereavement. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Hofstra University.


Elyse A. Miller, MA, ATR-BC, LCAT, currently works in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation in the North Shore- Long Island Jewish Health System. She received a degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology and her Masters Degree in Creative Arts Therapy from Hofstra University. Currently, she maintains a private practice in Massapequa Park, NY. She works with children, adolescents and adults, individual/family, in the areas of depression, trauma, bereavement, eating disorders, and divorce. She as well supervises professionals toward their ATR.


Louise Montello, is a Certified Music Therapist/Psychoanalyst, clinical research scientist in the Department of Psychology at New York University, and founder/director of the Creative Arts Therapy Certificate Program at New School University, where she has been teaching for nine years. She is also Associate Editor of the International Journal of Arts.


Dorit Netzer, M.A. ATR-BC, LCAT is an art therapist in private practice and an adjunct professor at Hofstra's Creative Arts Therapy Master's program. She has worked with a variety of populations in community settings and specializes in working with children and their families. Dorit is a doctoral candidate in the Global Psychology Program of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and is working on her dissertation, which focuses on mental imaging and creative expression as mediums for transpersonal development.


Sherry Reiter, Ph.D., is a creative arts therapist and clinical social worker. She is a Poetry Therapist/ Mentor-Supervisor (RPT/MS) as designated by the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) and Registered Drama Therapist/Board Certified Trainer (RDT/BCT) as designated by the National Association for Drama Therapy (NADT). A staunch believer in the creative arts for well-being, Sherry served on the steering committee for both organizations and is past President of NAPT. She is the current President of the National Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy, and the recipient of the 2002 NAPT Distinguished Service Award.
