

The Practicum in Rehabilitation Counseling (REHB 236) is designed to prepare graduate student trainees to function in a clinical setting and more easily adapt to the field practice of the rehabilitation counseling internship. Hence, graduate students who have completed the beginning counseling course and 12-15 semester hours of study are eligible to register. Students are assisted in their selection of practicum placements with primary sites being those where CRC supervision is easily available and especially those with RCE graduates. An essential part of this experience is the audio taping of individuals in a counseling setting with supervision and review by the course instructor.
Experiences include: case management, observations, readiness assessment, effective problem solving, goal development and supervision. Legal and ethical issues are discussed, including the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors.
The course is comprised of the following areas: Counseling approaches and how to integrate them to develop one's own effective counseling style, advanced interviewing skills and techniques, and analysis, assessment and evaluation. Students are required to log 100 hours of practicum experience.
