Elementary Education

About the Program

The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program is a 2 year program that leads toward New York State initial teacher certification in a specific grade level area. Each certification area has a program designed to blend on-campus methods course preparation with field experiences in a variety of school settings, culminating in full-time student teaching. Hofstra has a Placement Office that takes care of finding field placements for students within a reasonable distance from their homes.

Admission Requirements

You may apply for the Education program when you are a second semester sophomore, have a GPA of 2.75 and have completed 45 college credits.

How to Apply:
An application can be picked up in room 128 Hagedorn Hall/ the Office of The Department of Teaching, Literacy & Leadership or in my office room 142 Hagedorn Hall.
Along with your completed application, you will need to submit 2 letters of recommendation, a written personal statement of professional intent and rationale and transcripts from all institutions attended.

Program Components

Once in the program, here is what your next 4 semesters will look like.
First semester - You will take a Child Development course and be placed in a classroom with the opportunity to do observation.
Over the next 2 semesters, you will take 4 methods courses (LA/SS/Math &Science) and be placed in 2 different field settings for participant-observation.
Your fourth and final semester in the program will be student teaching.

Areas of Certification
You will have the opportunity to select from 3 areas of certification for you BA degree in education:
Early Childhood (Birth – second grade)
Elementary/Childhood (First – sixth grade)
Dual Certification (Early Childhood and Childhood)

Declaring a Co-major - You will need to declare a co-major that is compatible with Elementary Education. Your general adviser will help you select your co-major, answer any questions you might have and guide you in your selection from those co-majors that make you more marketable as a teacher.

Courses That Can be Taken Before Applying to the Program
You can take certain education courses before applying to the School of Education.
Please schedule an appointment with me as early in your college career as possible so that we can discuss these courses and fit them into your schedule.

Courses That Will Fulfill Both LA and Education Requirements
When courses of study are planned carefully, many courses can be taken that fulfill both University Liberal Arts and NYS Education Requirements.

Field Placement/Student Teaching

You will have the opportunity to observe and teach in a variety of classroom settings starting in your first semester in the program. You will have 250 hours in the field which will prepare you for your final semester in which you will be student teaching.

Our current and past student teachers have been placed in districts thoughout Queens, Nassau, Suffolk and New York City.
