Languages Other Than English & Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, M.S.Ed.

About the Program

The Master of Science in Education in Languages other than English (LOTE) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), a unique dual program, leads to two certifications in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and teaching foreign languages. The program includes:

  • State of the art classes in language teaching methodology, linguistics and cultural studies;
  • Student teaching experiences in local schools;
  • Close, clinical supervision by highly qualified educators;
  • Advisement geared to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds;
  • A scenic campus setting with a diverse student population;
  • Easy access to NYC’s vibrant cultural life.

Admission Requirements

Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria, including the following:

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree with a 2.75 or higher GPA;
  • 6 s.h. of prior course work in a language in which foreign language education certification will be sought
  • Personal statement describing the applicant’s intent and rationale for entering the program;
  • Two letters of reference addressing the applicant’s potential to succeed in the teaching profession and in the teacher education program course work
  • Interview with the coordinator of the program.

Employment Opportunities

This unique dual program was created in response to a surging need in the U.S. for teachers certified to teach Chinese and Arabic.  Graduates of the program will qualify to teach critical languages (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Spanish) as well as English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
