M.S. Ed. in English Education
At least one field placement must be in a district identified as high-needs by the New York State Education Department. All field experiences are incorporated into course curricula. Students enrolled in SPED 201/264 are placed in educational settings to work with students who have special-needs or disabilities. A minimum of 100 clock hours of participation/observation is required prior to student teaching. Placements are arranged by the Office of Field Placement. Departmental policy is to place prospective teachers in districts other than those in which they currently reside or in schools that they attended.
Grades 7-9

Grades 7-12
- LYST 209 - Language, Culture and Identity: Literacy Issues for Adolescents and Young Adults - 3 Semester Hours
- LYST 215A - Language and Literacy in Middle Childhood and Adolescence - 3 Semester Hours
- LYST 217A - Reading and Writing With Adolescents - 3 Semester Hours
- SPED 201 - The Exceptional Child - 3 Semester Hours
- SPED 264 - Inclusion in Today's Schools - 3 Semester Hours
Grades 10-12
- SED 290 - Instructional Patterns for English - 3 Semester Hours
Note:
- Students take LYST 209 or LYST 215A or LYST 217A
- Students take SPED 201 or SPED 264
Student Teaching
- SED 201 - Reflective Practice and Classroom Analysis - 3 Semester Hours
- SED 217 - Student Teaching - 6 Semester Hours

- SED 218 - Supervised Teaching - 6 Semester Hours
M.A.in English Education
A minimum of 50 clock-hours of college supervised field experience is required in specific cognate areas. Students are placed in the settings specific to the foci of their teaching certificate. All field experiences are incorporated into the course curricula. Placements are arranged by the Office of Field Placement. Department policy is to place students in districts other than those in which they currently reside or in schools that they attended. Please refer to the Hofstra Bulletin for more information.
B.A.in English Education
Participation/observation in middle and secondary schools are required in each of the following courses:
Grades 7-9
- SED 102 - Adolescent Development and Learning - 3 Semester Hours
Grades 7-12
- LYST 101 - Literacy for Middle/High School Teachers - 3 Semester Hours
- SED 151 - The Secondary School Teacher (High-needs placement)- 3 Semester Hours
- SPED 102 - Inclusion: Meeting Special Needs in PreK-12 Programs - 3 Semester Hours
Grades 10-12
- SED 152L - Internship in Secondary English - 1 Semester Hour
Note – Classes with a “L” suffix are taken concurrently with a 3 semester hour class
