Bio: 
Bruce Torff is a Professor of Educational Psychology and Director of the Doctoral Program in Learning and Teaching at Hofstra University.  He has published over 75 articles and books on various topics in educational psychology, cognitive-developmental psychology, teacher education, and musical cognition.  Much of his recent work focuses on educators’ beliefs about learning and teaching, the topic of his forthcoming book The Rigor Gap: Why Disadvantaged Students Aren’t Challenged in School and What to Do About It (Rowman and Littlefield).  Torff earned a doctorate at Harvard University, where he worked with Howard Gardner, and he held a postdoctoral appointment at Yale University in collaboration with Robert J. Sternberg.  In 2009, Torff was named Teacher of the Year at Hofstra.  Torff is active as a research-methods consultant and leader of professional-development workshops for educators.  He is also a jazz songwriter and pianist.
