Classroom Teachers’ Use of Data to Enhance Student Academic Performance
Presented by Dr. Eustace Thompson and Dr. Wafa Deeb Westervelt
TIME: Friday, 11:15 - 12:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Lincoln Suite, 4th floor

Teachers and administrators will develop strategies related to data-driven decision-making for instructional improvement.  Utilizing classroom data sets educators can focus on the equitable application of their skills and resources to maximize the learning of individual students.  Through the use of data, teachers and administrators will acquire the skills to develop individual student growth plans aligned to effective teaching practices.

Effective Questioning Strategies
Presented by Dr. Esther Fusco
TIME: Saturday, 11:15 - 12:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Lincoln Suite, 4th floor

This workshop explores the questioning cycle and how teachers and administrators can improve instruction through effective questions.  An overview of connecting questions and curriculum will be explored.  The questions students face on tests will be described so that teachers have an understanding of what is required cognitively to answer the various types of questions. Teachers will review how to structure a question, explore how to assess students’ responses to their questions and build students’ conceptual development.  This is a dynamic workshop in which teachers will experience a complete process and have the materials to take back and use in their schools.

Landscapes for Learning Science
Presented by Dr. Jacqueline Grennon-Brooks
TIME: Saturday, 2:30 - 3:45 p.m.
LOCATION: Lincoln Suite, 4th floor

Neurobiological research is beginning to flourish and provides strong evidence for why the intentional teaching of science is powerful for all ages, yet crucial for 3, 4 and 5 year olds.  This workshop opens with a call for teachers to find the curious learner within themselves and ends with examples of how curious learners become good teachers of science. Classroom explorations based on overarching “big ideas” of science play a vital role in nurturing students’ growth and development in a variety of academic and social domains. Participants will explore these unifying big ideas and experiment with ways to foster science learning in various settings, within the classroom, family, community and nature.
