Continuation Requirements: According to the Hofstra Bulletin, after achieving 64-credits hours students may only continue in the major program if they have achieved a 2.5 GPA in all coursework completed at Hofstra, including required professional education coursework, required physical education theory, and physical education skills techniques coursework. In addition, both the major advisor and the program faculty must recommend students. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to continue in the program.. If the student's GPA falls below 2.5, he or she will be placed on probation for the following semester. If the GPA does not come back up to the 2.5 level or if there is not significant progress made toward that goal the by the end of the probation semester, the student will be dropped from the program. Students dropped from the program may not be permitted to take major classes.

Admission to Student Teaching: To be admitted to student teaching, students must meet the following requirements: all the requirements listed above; receive a grade of C- or better in SPCM 1; successfully complete FDED 111 or 127, CT 102, PESP 103, 103A, 104, 104A, 154, 154A; and have no D's or F's or INC's in major classes.

Application forms for student teaching may be obtained in 243 Gallon Wing. Applications must be submitted by October 1 for admission to student teaching in the spring semester and by March 1 for admission to student teaching in the fall semester. Students who do not submit application materials by the appropriate date may not be admitted to student teaching in the following semester.

Additional Graduation Requirements: coaching internship; 2.5 GPA overall and in major courses; C- or better in all major courses; University writing proficiency requirement; Information Retrieval competency requirement.

Teacher Certification Requirements: Upon the successful completion of a teacher education program, students will be eligible to apply for the University's recommendation for New York State certification. For Initial certification, students are required to have passing scores on each of the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE): The Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), The Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written (ATS-W), and the Content Specialty Test (CST). Students not receiving passing scores on all three examinations will not be eligible for certification.

After receiving initial certification, teachers have 3 years to complete a master's degree in a related field in order to receive professional certification. Once the professional level of certification is received, teachers must complete 175 hours of professional development every 5 years in order to maintain certification. (See NYSED Certification Guidelines.)

I have read and understand the requirements for continuation in the program, admission to student teaching, teacher certification, and graduation. I also understand that it is my responsibility to keep track of my progress and meet all requirements for program continuation, admission to student teaching, teacher certification, and graduation.
