Aerodynamics and Design Summer Camp at Hofstra University is where dreams of becoming an engineer take flight! Boys and girls, entering grades 6-11, can learn from Hofstra University Ph.D. professors about the wonders of flight while experiencing a taste of college life. This 10-session summer camp introduces participants to the principles underlying aerodynamic design. Sessions are focused on phenomena of flight, such as how the lift force causing airplanes to fly is generated by airflow over wings and why the design of tall buildings needs to take into account the forces created by wind.

Short lectures will present the basic physical concepts that apply when fluids interact with objects, emphasizing the importance of velocity, pressure and friction. Hands-on experiments in the state-of-the-art Hofstra Aerodynamics Laborat will include:
  • Two subsonic wind tunnels
  • A supersonic wind tunnel
  • A flow visualization water tabic

Where Learning Takes Flight
Participants in the Aerodynamics and Design Summer Camp will gain an understanding of how aeronautical engineers use airflow characteristics to improve design and gain an appreciation of the role wind-tunnel experiments play in aerodynamic design. They also learn about the importance of aerodynamics in other fields.

A wide range of equipment will be used during sessions, including
  • Pilot-static tubes
  • Hot-wire anemometry systems
  • Force balance systems
  • Software to make real-time calculations to display results
Note: There is a $50 surcharge per session for additional materials and staff requirements.
