Research in my laboratory focuses on the molecular basis of temperature-dependent sex determination in turtles. Presently, research projects include a collaborative project with faculty members in biochemistry to study the temperature dependence of steroidogenic enzymes in embryonic snapping turtles; studies to examine the temperature dependence of plasma steroid hormone binding protein in hatchling turtles; cloning and sequencing of the genes for steroidogenic enzymes, with the goal of identifying differences in the structure of these genes in turtles with temperature-dependent sex determination and those with genetic sex determination; and studies of differential expression of transcription factors regulating genes for steroidogenic enzymes during the temperature-sensitive period.
