Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions (CMHP). Our department is comprised of multiple programs in Counseling, Creative Arts Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Rehabilitation Counseling, each with an overall focus on promoting the psycho-social health and development of the clients, consumers, and students with whom we work. Each program offers the standard bearing curriculum identified by the accrediting organizations in the respective disciplines and most lead to certification or licensure in the field. Further enriching the professional preparation curriculum, we build into each program supervised practicum and internship experiences which blend the core knowledge base and skills along with applied and practical training. Our programs are rigorous but provide the support for student success.
The CMHP faculty are well known and highly respected professionals including a Fulbright scholar, book authors, professional journal editors and contributors who publish and present nationally and internationally, as well as consult and work as clinical practitioners in their respective fields. Interested students are encouraged to collaborate with faculty on research; several have had opportunities to have work published and to attend and present at professional conferences.
Our students come from around the globe as well as next door. They attend both full and part-time, are highly engaged both in and outside of the classroom. Many choose to broaden their educational experience through volunteering in the community and by participating in leadership and networking opportunities through each programs’ very active student organization. Hofstra is also proud to have the Lambda Nu chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the International Honor Society for counselors. Additionally, in CMHP, there are a number of program specific student clubs which further advance professional development goals for the different specializations. Throughout their graduate work we encourage students to act responsibly, promote advocacy, and take advantage of all that is offered to grow personally as well as professionally.
We invite, and encourage you, to explore our site. Please feel free to contact me or any of the program directors for more information about our programs. We look forward to hearing from you.
