Hofstra’s MPH program emphasizes both the theoretical foundations of public health as well as its practical application. The competency-based curriculum is designed to provide health professionals with the analytical and statistical knowledge and skills required for successful public health practice and research.

Faculty have degrees in varied disciplines and are engaged in research and community work which informs their teaching, and enriches the classroom experience. Students have the opportunity to explore additional areas linked to specific faculty expertise, such as bioethics, chronic illness and aging suburban health disparities, clinical research management, medical anthropology, reproductive health, dental public health, disaster preparedness, outbreak investigations, and advanced epidemiology and environmental health.

Students are required to successfully complete 14 courses (including an internship and culminating experience). The MPH program is designed so that part-time students can complete the degree in under three years using a sophisticated instructional model that combines distance learning (online courses) with hybrid courses (online instruction combined with traditional instruction) and traditional, classroom-based instruction over seven semesters (summer, fall, spring).

Plan of Study

The program uses a cohort approach so that students travel through the curriculum as a cohesive group which strengthens bonds among students and fosters greater interaction and deeper learning.
