About the Program Director
Dr. Sharon Whitton is professor of teaching, literacy and leadership and graduate director of mathematics education programs at Hofstra University. She has more than 30 years of experience as a mathematics teacher, chairperson and teacher educator, including public school teaching (pre-k to 12). She has also taught at Hofstra in the Education and Business schools. She has chaired the teacher preparation programs at two universities and taught collegiate mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, and educational technology. In New York state, she is permanently certified in the teaching of mathematics (grades 7-12). For 20 years at Hofstra, she has coordinated numerous projects funded by the National Science Foundation. Her primary role in these projects has been to work with selected school districts of Long Island in facilitating professional development in the pedagogy of integrating mathematics into the science, technology, engineering, and arts (STEAM) curriculum. She has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and is a recognized expert in the implementation of the STEAM curriculum. In 2009, Dr. Whitton was honored by the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association (NCMTA) with the College Mathematics Teacher of the Year Award.
