Why study mathematics education at Hofstra University?

  • Faculty are committed to the development of teachers who are highly knowledgeable of mathematics and are proficient in teaching content in meaningful, exciting ways.  They are closely connected with Long Island, New York State, and national professional organizations.
  • Curricula at the graduate and undergraduate levels emphasize the logica behind mathematics, making it applicable to teachers of all grade levels.
  • Four required courses are accompanied by field participation/observation placements, prior to student teaching, in grades 7-12. During their final semester, students fulfill student teaching requirements in classrooms, grades 7-12.
  • Students receive personalized academic advisement from admission through graduation.
  • The Office of Field Placement and the Office of Educational Support Services serve students collaboratively throughout the teacher certification process.
  • Mathematics Education students connect with a large network of cooperating teachers and Hofstra alumni.
  • Classes are offered throughout January, Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions to support students with flexible course loads.  Evening courses allow students to complete field placements and student teaching requirements during the day.
