MISSION

National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University® is a non-partisan research institution dedicated to promoting objective, academically rigorous study of suburbia's problems, as well as its promise. Rooted in the laboratory of Long Island’s diverse and aging suburbs, almost literally in the shadows of the iconic Levittown, the National Center will study a broad range of issues from local and national perspectives and, whenever possible, collaborate with researchers at other respected institutions. The suburbs have emerged as the nexus of dynamic demographic, social, economic and environmental change in New York and throughout the United States. The tasks of identifying, analyzing and solving the problems of suburbia are essential for the health of the country--and central to the National Center's mission.

Lawrence Levy, dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, recently won three first place awards in the local Society of Professional Journalists competition. The Press Club of Long Island, the local SPJ affiliate, recognized Levy in the editorial opinion category for an op-ed column based on a poll of voter attitudes that was conducted by Hofstra for a conference on issues in the gubernatorial election. Levy also was cited for magazine writing for articles in Long Island Pulse - a controversial essay advocating for a local income tax and a part-memoir, part-feature about baby boomers still playing baseball. Levy, who was a Pulitzer finalistin 1999 and has won many of journalism's top prizes, said: "There's nothing more satisfying than being recognized by the people who know you the best - your colleagues."
