Premedical Studies Certificate FAQ’s
When is the application deadline?
It is rolling admissions, therefore there is no deadline. We do advise you to apply sooner rather than later so that you can register as soon as possible and secure your seat in the classes you would like to take.
How many credits/classes will I need to take?
This depends on your previous math and science background. In order to get the Certificate of Natural Science, you will be required to take a minimum of 32 (s.h.) credits in residence at Hofstra University.
How much will these credits cost?
Courses are charged per credit at the Undergraduate cost per credit hour. For more information, see the tuition and fees page.
What is a Certificate of Natural Science?
A total of 32 (s.h.)credits need to be taken in the sciences here at Hofstra University in order to receive a certificate. This could be used to enhance a portfolio when applying to medical school.
How long will it take to find out if I am accepted?
Once we receive all of the necessary materials, you can expect to hear back approximately two weeks later.
How many people do you accept into the program?
We do not have a cap but will only accept applicants who meet our qualifications.
What is the GPA needed to get into the program?
A 3.0 GPA.
Who is an ideal candidate for this program?
An ideal applicant would be someone who has a bachelor's degree but never took the necessary science courses to be admitted into a pre-health profession program.
If I already took these courses as pre req’s for medical school and want to repeat them to improve my grades, can I do that through this program?
This is allowed only on a case by case basis and must be discussed with your assigned adviser.
Do you offer courses year round?
Yes, we offer courses throughout the year. (Fall, Spring, Summer)
What other careers can this program prepare me for?
Dental School, Medical School, Chiropractic school, Physicians Assistant, Physical Therapist, Optometry, Podiatry, etc.
What campus resources will be available to me as a pre-health student?
All resources available to undergraduate/graduate students will be accessible for post baccalaureate students. This includes: library, fitness centers, residence halls, tutoring, etc.

Will anyone at Hofstra be able to help me with the medical school application process?
Yes, we provide assistance to students when they apply to medical and other pre-health programs.
Do you offer committee letters?
Students who complete at least 16 credits at Hofstra are eligible for committee letters.
What is the application fee?
Do you provide residential housing on campus to students in the post baccalaureate program?
Yes, please visit the Office of Residential Programs website for more information.
Do I register by myself?
We recommend you meet with a pre-health advisor to register each semester in order to stay on track.
Can I take courses that aren’t directly related to my program?
Yes, with special permission. Please contact a pre-health advisor to discuss this.
How long will it take to complete this program?
This will depend on your previous science background as well as how many courses you are able to take at once. If you need all sciences, it will be a minimum of 15 months.
Do you offer tutoring for any of the science or math courses?
Yes, through the University Tutorial Program.
When can I take the MCAT?
Once you finished the prerequisite courses you will be eligible to take the MCAT.
