Three Steps to File the FAFSA

Hofstra University is committed to helping families get the largest financial aid awards possible to maximize the affordability of a college education.

Use this checklist to get your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) filed quickly and easily.

All colleges and the federal government use this form to determine your level of financial need. Once you file your FAFSA, that information is then sent to the colleges you listed on your FAFSA form. Since some financial awards are given on a first-come, first-served basis, prompt filing is encouraged.

Step 1

Have these documents in hand when you file:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your driver’s license (if you have one)
  • Your parents’ W-2s stating their income for the past year (and yours, if you worked)
  • Your parents’ federal income tax return for the past year (and yours, if you worked)
  • Your parents’ most current bank statement (and yours, if you have your own account)

Step 2

Register for a FAFSA PIN

Both students and parents need their own PIN to access the FAFSA site. Here’s a direct link to register for your FAFSA PIN.

Step 3

File your FAFSA the fastest way – online!

Here’s a direct link to the FAFSA online form.

To be considered for financial assistance at Hofstra, please list us on your FAFSA. Our school code is 002732.

Once filed online, your financial information will be sent to schools you listed within two to three days.

If you prefer, you can download a PDF of the FAFSA and then fill out, print and mail it in.

A third option is to call 1-800-4-FED AID (1-800-433-3243) and have the FAFSA form sent to you.

Keep in mind that if you choose to mail in your FAFSA, your schools will receive your information in two to four weeks.

If you’re not sure which option is best for you, visit the FAFSA Filing Options site for more information.
