Chloe Panayiotou grew up in the small city of Pathos on the Mediterranean island nation of Cypress. The youngest of two children, she knew early on that she wanted to come to the United States for college, and she had her heart set on studying in the New York area.

“It was always my dream to go to college in the United States. I was always an independent child. My mom always disagreed. She wanted me to stay somewhere closer,” she said.

But Chloe, who will be a senior in the fall, convinced her mother to accompany her on a tour of New York area colleges during her senior year in high school. While she didn’t have time to take a full tour of Hofstra, she was impressed by the Admissions Office personnel. So when it came time to select a college, she chose Hofstra for both its educational offerings and its location.

“I decided to come to Hofstra because the Psychology program here was really good and the location was ideal, close enough to the city but far enough away from the distractions of city life.”

It is a decision she said she would eagerly recommend to others. “I like everything about Hofstra – its location, the beautiful campus, the small classes, the school community and school spirit. Hofstra has the ideal size of a school where you can easily make friends and be a part of the school community while still being an individual.”

A psychology major with a minor in sociology, Chloe‘s goal is to become a clinical child psychologist, preferably at a school or a children’s hospital. She plans to go on to graduate school in the New York area.

Chloe serves on the executive board of Hofstra's Hellenic Society for Greek American students and on the board of H*INT, a group for international students. In fact, Chloe was voted International Student Leader of the Year last year for her participation in various international student events.

She takes full advantage of Hofstra’s proximity to New York City, traveling in for Broadway shows and various events sponsored by the Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs.

Chloe said she found Hofstra to be a warm and friendly college that made her feel comfortable as an international student and also prepared her for her future career. ”I made so many great friends and met professors and faculty that really helped me make some important decisions about my major and future.”
