RANKED WRESTLERS HIGHLIGHT FIRST DAY OF CAA DUALS FAIRFAX, VA, Jan. 24, 2003 ? Each of the 12 nationally ranked wrestlers figured prominently in the scoring on the first day of the CAA Duals college wrestling event at the George Mason Fieldhouse. Each of the 11 Colonial Athletic Association teams were in competition Friday in the first two rounds of the first annual event. The final three rounds will be held Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. Hofstra, the only team nationally ranked at 19th by InterMat and 22nd by Amateur Wrestling News, won its only meet of the night, defeating host George Mason, 44-11. One of the highlights of the evening was the match between Hofstra sophomore Jon Masa (ranked 10th in the nation by both Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat) and George Mason junior Rob Becker (ranked 19th by InterMat) at 149 pounds. Masa took a 5-3 lead after two periods, but a pair of third-period takedowns allowed Becker to tie the score at 7-7 before Masa scored a reversal with less than five seconds left for a 9-7 victory. Becker won his first match of the night, a 6-2 decision over Sacred Heart?s Mark Laramee. The only nationally ranked wrestler to win twice on Friday was Drexel junior Chris Jones, ranked 10th by AWN and 12th by InterMat at 197. He won by fall in 2:15 over Campbell?s John Ottinger and scored a 13-4 major decision over Binghamton?s Derman Lewis. Each winning once were Hofstra sophomore Ricky LaForge (12th by AWN, 14th by InterMat), who scored an 18-2 technical fall (3:17) over George Mason?s Liam DeRenzis at 133; Hofstra freshman Mike Patrovich (11th by AWN), who won by fall in 4:59 over Mason?s Richard Appau at 157; Sacred Heart junior Robert Belville (20th by InterMat), who scored a 12-6 decision over James Madison?s Brian Consolvo at 157; Sacred Heart senior Anthony Reynolds (fifth by AWN, 10th by InterMat), who won a 14-4 major decision over James Madison?s Steve Kodish at 197; Rider senior Derek Jenkins (eighth by AWN, 10th by InterMat), who took a 15-4 major decision over Campbell?s Vic Arena at 157; and Rider senior Nick Harrington (19th by AWN, 20th by InterMat), who scored a 17-0 technical fall against Campbell?s Adam Rees at 165. Reynolds (against George Mason) and Hofstra sophomore 197-pounder Chris Skretkowicz (third in both polls) and the Pride?s junior 174-pounder Ralph Everett (14th by AWN, 15th by InterMat) each received a forfeit victory.
