HOFSTRA CULTURAL CENTER presents a conference

"Who Owns Writing?"
Revisited

A conference on the Future of Rhetoric and Composition

Thursday-Saturday
October 16-18, 2008

Keynote Speaker and Joseph G. Astman Distinguished Conference Scholar
Douglas Hesse

Director, Marisco Writing Program

Professor of English, University of Denver

In his 2005 CCC plenary address, Douglas Hesse asked, "Who owns writing?" noting that ownership comprises both control and responsibility. In revisiting this question, we invite participants to consider what our discipline might aspire to own and on what terms. Given the redefinition of the nature of writing instruction in Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing in the Disciplines (WID) programs, the growing number of free-standing writing programs, and widespread national and institutional changes in liberal arts education, we want to consider what writing instruction and programs might look like in the near and distant future.

Professor Hesse will give a keynote address entitled "Who Speaks for Writing? Ownership, Stewardship, Expertise, Ethics" on Friday, October 17. Another highlight is the plenary session on "Student Writing in the 21st Centruy" with David Bleich, University of Rochester; Frank Cioffi, Scripps College and Baruch College, CUNY; and Sondra Perl, The Graduate Center and Lehman College, CUNY. For a full schedule of events and registration information  view the conference registration program.

In conjunction with the conference, Hofstra Entertainment presents The Write Stuff, Thursday and Friday, October 16 and 17, at 8 p.m. in Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. Conceived and directed by Bob Spiotto, The Write Stuff is an imaginative and highly entertaining evening of "plays on words," including several short comedies by David Ives, selections from The Book of Sequels, Politically Correct Bedtime Stories, Fractured Jewish Fairy Tales, and other "stuff" from the pens of Abbott and Costello, George Carlin, Woody Allen and others. Tickets are $16, $13 senior citizens (over 65), $10 matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. One free ticket with current faculty/staff/student HofstraCard.
