Sally Gall: Selected Landscapes

Sally Gall, an artist who uses landscapes as her subject matter, has spoken of photography as her medium of choice due to her passionate love of nature and her desire to interact with the outdoors. In the majority of her photographs the human figure is absent. It is the earth, the sky and the waterscapes in remote locations around the world that she responds to, and in turn presents to us in her black and white photographs as serene, suspended moments in time.

Ms. Gall was born in Washington, D.C. in 1956. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence in 1978, and then lived in Houston, Texas. In 1987 she moved to New York City which eventually became her permanent base of operations. She has taught at the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City and lectured at photography workshops both in the United States and abroad. Over the years her work has appeared in numerous publications including Travel & Leisure Magazine, Vogue, Esquire, The New York Times Sunday magazine and New York Magazine. Her published books include: The Water's Edge (1995), Between Worlds (1998) and Subterranea (2003).

Public collections with Gall's works include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; the New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana; the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; the Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey and the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France.

The 13 works on display date from 1980 to1997 and were taken in the United States (Louisiana, Texas, New Hampshire and California) as well as Brazil, France and Indonesia.
