Volunteer Application Process

What is the deadline to apply to volunteer?

  • Applications will be accepted until September 8, 2008.

What are the required applications materials?

  • Resume with your GPA
  • Cover letter – please indicate why you should be selected as a volunteer for the 2008 Debate at Hofstra University

Do I have to apply on-line?

  • Yes. To manage the number of expected volunteer applications, all students interested in volunteering must apply on The Career Center’s PRIDE CMS System.

Is there any advantage to submitting my volunteer application early?

  • Yes, The Volunteer Selection Committee will begin reviewing applications as they come in. It is advisable to get your application in early. All decisions will be made and applicants notified by the middle of September. If volunteer opportunities arise over the summer months, which require an earlier start date this information will be noted on the volunteer website and selections will be made accordingly.

How to Access Pride-CMS

  • Click on "My Hofstra Portal" at the top of any Hofstra University Web page.
  • Log into the Portal using your Hofstra username and password. Call The Computer Center for assistance, (516) 463-7777.
  • Click on the "Support" tab, and then "Pride Career Management System" under Career Services.

Once in Pride-CMS, please check that your profile is accurate and complete. Select "Jobs & Internships" where you will have the ability to filter your view. We recommend typing EDUCATE 08 in the keyword search. Apply for ONLY one (1) opportunity.

When and how will I know if I have been selected as a volunteer?

  • Selected volunteers will receive an email notification to their Hofstra email address.

How confidential is my application?

  • The Volunteer Selection Committee will review all applications in determining volunteer candidates. The Committee will not have access to personal information such as race, gender, citizenship status, or social security number. If a student is recommended to volunteer, personal information provided on the application will be used to initiate a background check.

Why are you requesting my social security number, date of birth, race, sex, and citizenship status?

  • Hofstra University is required to conduct a background check on all volunteers. The Selection Committee will not have access to this information when making its decisions.

What if I need to change the information submitted in my volunteer application?

  • If you need to change the information submitted in your application, you can withdraw your application and reapply with updated materials.

Why do you want to know if I have a car? What if I don’t have a car? Will this hurt my chance to volunteer?

  • A limited number of positions will require a volunteer to run errands off campus, which will require personal transportation. The majority of positions will not require transportation.
