Expressions of Democracy 2012

Expressions of Democracy 2012 is a series of daylong arts events that will be held on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, the day before the second Presidential debate at Hofstra University.  Most events are filled but there are some that are still available and free and open to the public.

The available events include:

  • Social Realism Art Exhibit: Middle and High school student artists in Nassau and Suffolk Counties convey what they consider the challenging issues facing the United States today through the images they create.

Locations: Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus;

  • The Bonus Army 7- 8:15 p.m. Black Box Theatre, New Academic Building (NAB), Sunday, October 14
    During the Great Depression, WWI Veterans marched across America to claim their rights…
    Original play by Isaac Rathbone, directed by Cindy Rosenthal

Democracy Dance Project 2012 - 11:15 a.m. – 12:40 p.m.
HS Dance Contest Winners, Hofstra dancers and professionals take on important social issues through dance. All original choreography, including pieces by Dyane Harvey and Darrah Carr, Coordinated by Anita    Feldman
Location: Adams Playhouse

Democracy in Performance: American democracy comes to life on campus in live performances as full-costumed professional scholar-actors, assisted by our top student performers, create presentations that highlight pivotal moments in our nation’s history. Back by popular demand after its debut in 2008, when Hofstra hosted the final Presidential debate between then-Senator Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain.

  • Café Society: Resistance to Jim Crow though Jazz and Poetry of the Harlem Renaissance  12:50 -1:45 p.m. Adams Playhouse
    A recreation of Café Society, New York’s first integrated jazz club, directed by Melissa Adeyeye
    with band led by jazz pianist Dave Lalama; music and spoken word by Melissa Adeyeye, Shakirah Demesier and Lamar K. Cheston

  • Civil Rights and the birth of the NAACP  Monday, October 15  2:55 – 4:20 p.m.
    with veteran historical performer Charles Everett Pace as W.E.B DuBois
    Location: Tent, Calkins Quad
