CTSE Event

The Center for Teaching and Scholarly Excellence invites all faculty to a Brown-Bag-Lunch Discussion:

Pedagogy and Objectivity: Neutrality and Advocacy in the Classroom

Wednesday, April 30, 2008
11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Hofstra Hall Parlor

Should teachers maintain a persona of strict impartiality before their students? Or is it permissible, perhaps even obligatory, that they reveal their positions and, thereby, model open-minded commitment? Is advocacy ever permissible--if not, why exactly? If so, how might we distinguish it from indoctrination? What does "fair and balanced" mean for treatment of controversial or sensitive topics--just data without interpretation? equal time for pro and con? multiple perspectives? Come discuss these and related issues over lunch. The discussion will be led by CTSE member, Dr. Ralph Acampora, Department of Philosophy.

Please bring your lunch. Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served.
