Professor Annette Grevious is an assistant professor of speech and drama at Claflin University. Dr. Daniel Sciarra is a professor of counselor education at Hofstra. Last year Professor Grevious spent a semester teaching at Hofstra, and Dr. Sciarra spent a semester teaching at Claflin. In this program they will discuss their exchange experiences and the importance of diversity at institutions of higher education. They will also discuss their experiences as they relate to pedagogy in the classroom and the differences and similarities in teaching at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and at majority institutions.

Professor Grevious is director of the Claflin University Theatre Ensemble, founder and director of the Claflin University Touring Company, and assistant project director of Claflin University's Performing Arts for Effective Civic Education (PAECE) program, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education. She has appeared in numerous stage plays including Flyin’ West, Twilight Los Angeles, 1992, and Monsieur Baptiste, The Con Man. Most recently, she performed a woman-show entitled The One, and the Hofstra community may remember her from Hofstra Entertainment’s original production entitled Fashion Statements!

Dr. Sciarra is fluently bilingual in Spanish, and he counsels Latino children, adolescents, and families through the Stamford Child Guidance Center in Stamford, CT. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters on the subject of multicultural counseling, Dr. Sciarra is the author of two books, Multiculturalism in Counseling (Peacock, 1999) and School Counseling: Foundations and Contemporary Issues (Brook/Cole, 2004), and he is currently writing a third book, Emotional Disorders in the Classroom (Allyn & Bacon, 2008). He is a licensed psychologist, licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC), and a national certified counselor (NCC).
