Ying Qiu

Dr Qiu is Director of the Asia Center at Hofstra University. She has also been an Adjunct Professor of Global Studies and Geography at the Department for Global Studies and Geography since 2010. Between 2005 and 2010, she was the Consultant and Economic Affairs Officer for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (United Nations ESCAP). Between 2003 and 2005, she worked as a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Dr Qiu received her PhD in Geography and Environmental Sciences from the University of Birmingham, UK in 2004. Situated at the interface of economic geography and sustainability studies, her research is motivated by a desire to better understand the process of economic development with environmental sustainability. 

Dr Qiu’s research has been published in journals such as Economic GeographyThe SAM Advanced Management Journal, Asia Pacific Trade and Investment Review etc. She was co-authors of two books, entitled Eco-efficiency Indicators: Measuring Resource-use Efficiency and the Impact of Economic Activities on the Environment and Trade Facilitation in Selected Landlocked Countries in Asia,which were published by the United Nations ESCAP. Her book chapters appeared in Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific 2008MDGs Regional Progress Report 2007 Update and The Millennium Development Goals: Progress in Asia and the Pacific 2006.

She conducted a number of economic and sustainable development projects including United Nations ESCAP/ NEASPEC Project on Eco-efficiency Partnership, United Nations Development Project on Trade Facilitation and WTO negotiations, WTO/ United Nations ESCAP Technical Assistance Project, Asian Development Bank/ United Nations ESCAP Project on Empowering the Sustainable Development of Rural Area etc.

She was the recipient of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship (ESRC, UK), China Studies Grant (British Council), Dean’s Funding (University of Birmingham), British Chevening Scholarship (British Council), Overseas Research Scholar (ORS Committee), and Visiting Research Fellowship(Xi’an Jiaotong University).

She was invited to review papers for referred journals such as Economic GeographyGeoforumTourism ManagementAsia Pacific Development JournalSocial Science Journals (SAGE Publications) and international organizations such as OECD and Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement.

Dr Qiu has taught Geography of East and Southeast Asia, Economic Geography, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Doing Human Geography, Living in Cities, Globalization and Capitalism in the South, Transformation and Development in China, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.
