Ira Singer, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Professor Singer earned his A.B. at Princeton University and his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. Before coming to Hofstra, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, and Johns Hopkins University. His research interests include the philosophy of David Hume, epistemological skepticism, the foundations of ethics, moral psychology, free will, personal identity, and the right to privacy. Most generally, he is puzzled by, and happy to puzzle over, the relation between naturalistic accounts and normative claims. He regularly teaches Introduction to Ethics, Ethical Theory, and Classical Modern Philosophy; in the Fall of 2003 he is teaching an Honors College seminar, entitled Character and the Good Life, and a First Year Program seminar, entitled Self, Freedom, and Responsibility.
