Bio

Professor Sander earned a B.A. cum laude in Hebrew Literature at Brandeis University and an M.F.A. in directing on Heinz and Mellon Fellowships at Carnegie-Mellon University. He spent a year at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, was an Acting Fellow at Bennington College for two years and studied Shakespeare at the University of Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

Professor Sander teaches advanced acting technique, play analysis and directs productions as part of the Hofstra drama season.

Sander is a member of Actors Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He has performed off-Broadway, in stock, dinner theatre and at regional theaters in Dallas, TX, Kansas City, MO and Atlanta, GA. For two years he was resident director/dramaturg at The Cleveland Play House on National Endowment for the Arts and Cleveland Foundation grants. His 2005 production of Vivien in New York City was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and his production of Moonchildren in Chicago was nominated for two Jefferson Awards as best production and best direction of the year.

As a translator his work has been seen at the Mint Theatre, the Chelsea Theater Center and the Interart Theatre in New York City and at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. His 1972 translation of Ice Age was awarded the PEN - Goethe House Prize for translation. He is the co-author of The Actor's Eye with Morris Carnovsky, a book on acting technique.

He has taught at Brandeis University, was head of the Professional Actor Training Program at Ohio University and Hallmark Distinguished Professor and director of Performance Training at University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has been at Hofstra since 1988 and served as chair of the Department of Drama and Dance.
