Bio

My central research interests have been in the mechanisms that generate racial, ethnic and gender inequalities in the labor market, focusing on how a) specific forms of economic organization constrain or facilitate these mechanisms, how b) ideologies work in producing individuals' attitudes towards "others" (e.g. racial minorities, women, and immigrants) and how c) labor relations interact with issues of race, nativity and gender. I have explored these issues in a variety of local contexts, including Monterey Park, NY (a minority majority suburb), Los Angeles, CA (low wage industries) and Silicon Valley, California (hi-tech industry). The bulk of my research is based on a particular type of qualitative data, in-depth interviews, and subsequently, a secondary focus of interest for me is the methodological considerations inherent in this type of data collection and interpretation. Finally, my current research project concerns the health dimensions of inequality and asks how the characteristics of communities produce racial and class inequalities in health. This project focuses on the case of Hempstead Village, NY, and more broadly, Nassau County, NY.
