G. Stuart Smith, Associate Professor of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, teaches broadcast journalism in the department. He has more than 30 years experience in the field from radio reporting and management to TV reporting, videography, producing and management.

His stories have won awards for investigative and feature reporting as well as photography from the Associated Press, UPI, RTNDA, and the Society of Professional Journalists. As news director of the public TV station at the University of Florida his students won several top SPJ regional awards and national awards for reporting and best newscast.

Professor Smith also produced two documentaries for public television. Heritage or Hate? looks at the controversy over the use of Confederate symbols in public places. A Bridge to Cuba follows a group of American sailors befriending Cubans behind the backs of the two governments. The key storyline follows a Cuban mother whose husband fled on a raft; the documentary shows the Americans trying to reunite the mother and her son with their husband/father in United States A Bridge to Cuba won a First Place Green Eyeshade award from the Society of Professional Journalists and is being distributed nationally through American Public Television. His current research interest explores the rise of solo videojournalists in both TV and newspaper websites.
