Bio

Dr. Mercurio (Mark) Veltri earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from St. John's University in 1978 and a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Florida in 2004. He has also received specialized training in more than 20 other areas of forensic science over the past 20 years. These include latent fingerprint detection, FTIR spectroscopy, instrumental analysis of explosives, energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy. Dr. Veltri was a detective in the NYPD from 1983 to 2003, with a primary expertise in pharmacology. He taught as an adjunct assistant professor in the Criminal Justice program at St. John's University for more than 10 years and lectured to Police Academy detectives in criminal investigation courses. He has also testified in many criminal cases. Dr. Veltri has helped develop and co-teach Hofstra's Survey of Forensic Science course. In fall 2007 he taught his own course in The Analysis and Pharmacology of Drugs of Abuse, which familiarizes students with analytical methods used to identify and characterize drugs of abuse.
