Bio

Joseph Fichtelberg joined the Hofstra faculty in 1990.  A specialist in early American literature, he has published three books—The Complex Image: Faith and Method in American Autobiography (1989), Critical Fictions: Sentiment and the American Market, 1780-1870 (2003), and Risk Culture: Performance and Danger in Early America (2010). He is now at work on a book titled Beauty and Terror: The Aesthetics of Violence in Classic American Literature.  He has published essays in numerous scholarly journals including Legacy, Early American Literature, Prose Studies, Eighteenth-Century Fiction, and Studies in the Literary Imagination, and has served on the editorial board of Early American Literature.  Dr. Fichtelberg teaches courses on American literature from the Colonial period to the Civil War.
