Bio

Harold M Hastings, PhD, is Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scientist after a 43 year career at Hofstra University, which included 100+ journal articles, three books, directing research grants from the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. He served as Chair of the Department for 12 years and helped lead development of the MS in Medical Physics. Dr. Hastings is still active in the New York State Section of the American Physical Society, where he serves on the Executive Committee, and continues interest in supervising student research projects.

Current research interests

  • Mathematics applied to problems in physics, chemistry and biology
  • Excitable media – dynamics of the heart, brain and the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction.
  • Emergence – how  larger scale dynamics arises out of aggregation and amplification of dynamics on smaller scales, for example, generation of waves in excitable media
