Bio:

Nancy F. Kaplan (Ph. D., New York University), Department Chair, Radio, Television, Film - teaches courses in the Television program. Her research interests include media literacy, new and interactive media, entertainment education, and media accessibility for people with disabilities.

With more than 30 years of professional production experience in the television industry, Professor Kaplan is a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), the National Academy of Media Arts and Sciences (NAMAS), and the Broadcast Educators Association (BEA). She has worked as a producer, director, writer, associate director, stage manager and journalist in both studio and field production for commercial television (ABC, CBS), public television (WLIW), and corporate and educational media, encompassing over 1,500 shows at the network level and over 4,000 productions on the local level, including work at WWOR, WSNL, WCBS and cable. Some of her network production credits include Good Morning America (ABC), One Life to Live (ABC), All My Children (ABC), Sportsbeat with Howard Cosell (ABC), As the World Turns (CBS), and PrimeTime Live (ABC). She has served as a judge for the New York International Film and Television Festival, the NATAS Emmys, and the Broadcast Education Association Media Arts Festival. She also produces and moderates the Annual Jewish Film Festival in Bellmore, New York.

She is the co-author of the book Student Television in America: Channels of Change (1998) and wrote, "Multimedia: Information, Knowledge, and Converging Technologies," a chapter in the book Les Medias et L'information aux Etats-Unis de 1945 a Aujourd'hui, published for Universite Paris - Sorbonne (1997).

Dr. Kaplan is founder and faculty advisor to the Hofstra chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC). She is also an alum and community volunteer at WRHU, 88.7 FM, Hofstra's radio station and Long Island's oldest noncommercial radio station. In addition, she is a volunteer for the Guide Dog Foundation and can sometimes be seen with a puppy-in-training on campus.
