Bio

JONATHAN LIGHTFOOT is an Associate Professor in the Teaching, Learning & Technology Department at Hofstra University. He received his Ph.D. in Policy Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Master’s degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Cornell University. Dr. Lightfoot represented Hofstra’s School of Education on the University Senate for 6 years and chaired the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee. Work outside of the academy include conducting workshops for K-12 teachers, staff and students on cultural identity construction, cross cultural communication and reducing prejudice and hate crimes.

Teaching Interests

Courses taught include Children of Color: the Social Construction of Race in America’s Schools; Foundational Perspectives in Multicultural Education; The American School, Philosophy of Education and Introduction to Higher Education.

Research Interests

His research agenda focuses on anti-racist/ anti-oppression education and schooling, education for social justice, school desegregation and critical review of legal and public policy. He is a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Social and Cultural Foundations in Education and the International Journal of Education Administration. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Research on Leadership Education (JRLE).
