Bio:

Peter Gershon, Associate Professor (Ph.D., Indiana University) was the School of Communication’s 2004 Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Dr. Gershon teaches courses in television production and aesthetics. He has an extensive professional background in television production including work in public television and corporate media. He has produced and directed television documentaries, instructional and promotional videos, as well as live, global business teleconferences and symposia. His research interests include television production and curriculum. Prior to coming to Hofstra in 1995, he taught at the University of West Florida, which also honored him with a Distinguished Teaching Award. His documentary about Southern writing, Southern Voices, Southern Words was named Best Documentary by the National Broadcasting Society in 1995. He produced, directed and cowrote With One Voice: The Battle Against Breast Cancer on Long Island as a three year collaborative production with a number of students, faculty and staff within Hofstra’s School of Communication. It was regionally broadcast in October, 1999, on Long Island’s PBS affiliate, WLIW21; and was named as an Editor’s Choice by the editors of TV Guide, and a viewing highlight by the N.Y. Times, and Newsday. Subsequently, it garnered a number of additional honors, including First Place (Current Events) in the 2000 Silver State Documentary Festival, an Honorable Mention in the 48th Columbus International Film Festival (2000), as well winning Communicator, Videographer, and Telly Awards. In November 2001, Dr. Gershon was one of twenty professors from around the nation chosen as a delegate to the 2001 Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Faculty Seminar in Burbank, CA. He served as Chair of the AVF Department from 2002-2005. Dr. Gershon enjoys hiking, bicycling and camping, and has been an avid Dead Head since 1971.
