Department of Drama and Dance Presents "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress"

April 12-21, 2013, Black Box Theater

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY …  The 1993 Alan Ball comedy Five Women Wearing the Same Dress will be performed by Hofstra University’s Department of Drama and Dance, April 12-21, 2013, at the Black Box Theater, New Academic Building, South Campus.

Show times are Fridays, April 12 and 19, at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, April 13 and 20, at 8 p.m.; Sundays, April 14 and 21, at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, April 18, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive up to two free tickets upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. The setting for the comedy, directed by Hofstra Professor Royston Coppenger, is a bridal reception in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the mid-1980s. Over the course of an hour and a half, numerous cocktails and other controlled substances, the play investigates the relationships, intrigues and traumas of a group of bridesmaids behind the scenes at a wedding none of them really wanted to attend.

Playwright Alan Ball is the creative genius behind the Academy Award winning screenplay for American Beauty. He has also received acclaim as the creator and executive producer of the HBO series True Blood and Six Feet Under.

In his director’s notes, Professor Coppenger writes that he grew up outside Knoxville and “during the time this play is set, I attended more than a few weddings of my high school and college friends.

“One of the things that drew me to this play is the precise way it depicts the collision of the old south and the new in the person of its well-to-do characters. Alan Ball manages to capture something very real about the heightened backstage life of weddings. In the course of a few hours, Ball’s characters are moved to re-examine and reevaluate some of the choices they’ve made. New friendships will be born, old friendships will be transformed, and characters will learn to let go of some of the painful aspects of the past as they strive to embrace the future.”
