2013 Hofstra University Student Art Show
Presented by the Department of Fine Arts and Art History
Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.: Hofstra’s Department of Fine Arts and Art History is presenting its annual Student Art Show from May 8-13, 2013 at Calkins Hall. The show will feature more than 300 pieces of the finest artwork created by Hofstra students in painting, drawing, 3D, photography, design and new media.
“The quality of work across traditional and new formats in this year’s shows attests to the passion our students have for the visual arts,” said Fine Arts Professor Tom Klinkowstein.
There will be an opening reception for the art show during Common Hour (11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m.) on Wednesday, May 8. There will be music and refreshments, and awards will be given to recognize the finest student art work in a variety of categories.
Among these awards is the Michael Gordon Prize, established in memory of Hofstra Fine Arts Professor Michael Gordon by his wife in 1999. The prize is awarded to one or more students whose paintings or sculptures best exemplify Professor Gordon’s view that form is the essence of art. The Outside Juror Award will be judged this year by Alex Liebergesell, associate professor, Pratt Institute of Art and Design. In addition, there will be the selection of the Hofstra University Purchase Award. This $1,000 award, made possible by the generosity of anonymous donors, allows the Department to acquire a work of art exhibited in the student show.
