Hofstra Celebrates 2012 Midyear Commencement

Janet Huidekoper Brown, Exec. Dir. for the Commission on Presidential Debates, is the Commencement Honoree

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Approximately 600 undergraduate, graduate and law students will participate in Hofstra’s midyear commencement ceremony on Thursday, December 20, 2012,  at 7 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on the North Campus. Janet Huidekoper Brown, executive director for the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), will be the commencement honoree and guest speaker.

Ms. Brown has served as the CPD’s executive director since the organization was established in 1987. The CPD is the non-partisan, non-profit corporation that sponsors and produces televised presidential debates during each general election. Hofstra University has been privileged to work closely with the CPD to host two presidential debates – the first on October 15, 2008, and the second on October 16, 2012.

Prior to joining the CPD, Ms. Brown served in appointed positions at the White House and the Office of Management and Budget.  She also served on the staffs of the Hon. John C. Danforth in the United States Senate and Ambassador Elliot L. Richardson at the State Department.  In 1986 she was the recipient of a fellowship in the Japan Society’s U.S.-Japan Leadership Program. 

Ms. Brown has a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University.

Commencement participants and guests:

The midyear ceremony will be held in the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for undergraduates, graduates and the School of Law. Due to the seating capacity of the facility, seating will be limited. Each Midyear Commencement Graduate will receive 5 tickets and be able to sign up for extra tickets. You may sign the list when you pick up your academic attire. Based on past history, it is unlikely that there will be any extra tickets. The David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex is wheelchair accessible on the main level and will be available for guests requiring this area. One family member may accompany those with special needs in this area during the ceremony. Upon entrance to the Complex, please contact an usher who will be happy to escort you.

Directions to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex

Meadowbrook Parkway to Exit M4 - Route 24 West (Hempstead Turnpike). Stay on 24W for about one mile. Pass Nassau Coliseum and travel under the first over head walk way. Once you pass the first over head walk way you will make your first right turn onto campus at the traffic light. Go to your second stop sign and make a right turn. The Mack Sports Complex will be a ¼ of a mile on your right hand side.
