Athletic Training Program Recognizes Outstanding Students

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY --  The University’s Athletic Training Education Program wrapped up the year with two annual events recognizing outstanding students:  the Athletic Training Olympics and the student awards celebration.

Athletic Training Olympics

The Olympics competition, in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Hofstra Athletic Training Society, a student-run pre-professional club. The competition test skills required of athletic trainers. Among this year’s events were an ankle-taping relay, an obstacle course and an ace-wrap pass.

Over the years, the competition has expanded to include local alumni who return and compete against teams of students and faculty.  This year, five teams competed, with a student team taking top honors. Members of the winning team were: Michelle Emile, Kayce Lustrino, Alexandra Mezzanotte, Alexandra Sperduti, Alex Viveiros, Katie Wiking, and Matt Manu.

Student Awards Celebration

Athletic training students were honored for academic achievements, including induction into the Iota Tau Alpha Athletic Training Honor Society, for student service and for outstanding clinical performance. At Hofstra, a student must earn a GPA of at least 3.5 in their major to qualify for Iota Tau Alpha.

Three sophomores, Michelle Bandell, Sabina Konrad and Marissa LoMonaco were inducted into Iota Tau Alpha, and three other students, Kayce Lustrino, Elizabeth Smith and Alexandra Sperduti had posters displayed at the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association Meeting in June.

Student Clinical Performance Awards included:
• Most Outstanding Athletic Training Student: Kayce Lustino
• Level IV Award, for outstanding senior: Kayce Lustino
• Level III Award, for outstanding junior: Kaitlin Allsop
• Level II Award, for outstanding sophomore: Michelle Bandell and Alexandra Mezzanotte
• Most Improved Athletic Training Student: Matei Manu
• “Hard Hat” Award, for student who displays hard work, diligence and dedication beyond expectations:  Michael Schmidt
