Hofstra Hosts an Educational Conference on the Impact of Technology in K-12 Schools

Facebook, ‘Sexting’ and Social Networking Among Topics Discussed

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The School of Education, Health and Human Services will hold a conference for K-12 superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals and Hofstra department chairs on the impact of technology and social media, such as Facebook and so-called ‘sexting’ on schools. 

The conference is titled: “A Legal Clinic – A Survey of Educational Law Topics,” and will be held on January 13, 2010 from 8:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Scott Skodnek Business Development Center, room 246, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus. 

The conference will also address special education, residency requirements, custodial issues and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  Conference presenters are from Guercio and Guercio, LLP., a law firm that represents forty-one Long Island school districts.

“The use of Facebook and other social networking sites, as well as ‘sexting,’ has presented new challenges to schools,” said Martin Blum, Assistant Dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Services. “The conference will examine the implications of the use of technology and its impact on schools.  Additionally, non-custodial parents and residency requirements have continued to perplex school personnel and cause concern as well as special education, so those topics will be addressed as well.”
