Hofstra University seeks nominations for 75th Anniversary Awards and Hofstra History Project
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Do you know someone whose impact on Hofstra University stands out? Or a person who has a compelling story to tell about their association or experience with the University?
Then Hofstra wants to hear from you. To commemorate its 75th anniversary, the University is calling for nominations for its 75th Anniversary Awards, and for The Hofstra History project, which will create a comprehensive oral history of the University's first 75 years.
The 75th Anniversary Awards, which is being spearheaded by the Alumni Organization, will recognize 75 individuals who have had the greatest impact on the University since its founding in 1935. The honorees will be celebrated at a public ceremony on Sept. 24, 2010.
Nominations can be submitted by faculty, staff, alumni, students and friends of the University. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 29, 2010. Nominations can be submitted online, or by mail. For more information, call the Office for Development and Alumni Affairs at (516) 463-6636.
The Hofstra History Project is a unique effort to celebrate the 75th anniversary that unites past and present by using teams of current students to interview alumni, administrators, staff, VIP visitors, local residents, about their memories of, and experiences with Hofstra. The students learned how to take oral histories during a special class in Fall 2009. They will travel locally and nationally this spring to collect anecdotes and stories that will be recorded and transcribed into a rich, archival narrative that captures Hofstra's spirit, while chronicling its history. The goal is to conduct about 100 interviews. The oral histories will be showcased in multi-media presentations and in a variety of publications during the year-long anniversary celebration.
To nominate someone, email Assistant Dean of Special Collections/Archivist Geri Solomon. Please include contact information for the nominee, and as much of the following information about the person as possible: significant involvement with Hofstra, involvement with significant university events or organizations, participation in or observation of news-worthy Hofstra events, how long they have been associated with Hofstra and their status (faculty, student, alumni, etc.)
Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 150 undergraduate and more than 160 graduate offerings in liberal arts and sciences, business; engineering; communication; education, health and human services; and honors studies, as well as a School of Law.
