Super Bowl Star Party at Hofstra

Astronomy Outreach Program offers alternative Super Bowl Sunday event featuring more stars than a halftime show

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Those who won’t be glued to the TV on Super Bowl Sunday can watch a much bigger show – Venus, the moon, the Orion Nebula and the Pleiades star cluster.

Hofstra's astronomy outreach program is once again offering Super Bowl Star Party, an alternative to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 1, 2009 for all those non-football fans, football widows and kids, and anyone else who is looking for something else to do that day. Super Bowl Star Party will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Hofstra Observatory atop Herman A. Berliner Hall (Chemistry and Physics Building), California Avenue at Huntington Place, South Campus.

Hofstra will have several telescopes set up to ensure adequate star-gazing for the evening, or for a quick look at half-time. The program will begin with an introduction to the winter sky by Hofstra astronomers in room 117. For those who still want to sneak a peak at the game, a TV will be set up next to the observatory.

Updates and the latest weather information is available at (516) 463-2 SKY (2759), or at www.hofstra.edu/astronomy. For more information e-mail: observatory@hofstra.edu
