Hofstra Professor tapped to represent U.S. to International Sociological Association

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Dr. Margaret Abraham, a Hofstra University sociology professor and special advisor to the provost on diversity initiatives, has been appointed as the international representative for the American Sociological Association (ASA).

Dr. Abraham's four-year term begins July 1, and among her first duties will be to represent the ASA at the XVII International Sociological Association's World Congress of Sociology, which will be held July 11-17 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The International Sociological Association is a non-profit organization that represents sociologists from 167 countries. Abraham will represent the interests and concerns of the 14,000-member ASA, which was founded in 1905.

"It's a wonderful opportunity in a globalizing society to make these linkages across the world," Abraham said of her appointment. "These important connections are critical to our work."

Dr. Abraham has taught at Hofstra since 1990, and served as chair of the sociology department from 2000-2003. Her areas of expertise and interest are violence against women, globalization, migration and South Asian Diaspora. She has written extensively about domestic violence in the South Asian immigrant community. She earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in sociology from the University of Delhi in India, and a doctorate in sociology from Syracuse University.
